Delhi Metro Rail Corporation awarded Bombardier Transportation a contract for the supply of 40 Movia metro cars increasing the existing fleet to 816 metro cars, from 776.
The new modern, high-capacity Movia metro vehicles for Delhi Metro integrate Mitrac propulsion and control system and the Flexx Metro 3000 bogies, an extremely robust and reliable design specifically adapted to suit Delhi’s infrastructure.
These new vehicles will accommodate up to 740 more passengers and once configured into 8-car trainsets, will carry as many as 2,960 passengers providing much-needed capacity increases on three of Delhi’s main metro lines.
“These additional trains will bring additional capacity to Delhi Metro’s rail network and they will be delivered from our state-of-the-art manufacturing sites in Vadodara,” Sudhir Rao, Managing Director, India, Bombardier Transportation said.
The high degree of localisation at both the Savli and Maneja sites is in line with Delhi Metro’s indigenous procurement plan that encourages local manufacturing and the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ strategy by delivering rail vehicles, products and solutions that are developed locally, for both Indian and foreign markets.
Bombardier is one of Delhi Metro’s largest rollingstock suppliers and with over 120 km of line in operation for Delhi Metro’s Lines 5, 6 and 7, is also their largest signalling solutions contractor.
Recently, Bombardier commissioned the last major section on Delhi’s first fully automated metro Line 7 with its advanced Cityflo 650 communications-based train control solution to support safe and reliable automatic train operations.
