LG Cargo, the freight division of Lithuanian Railways, together with Belarusian and Ukrainian railway companies, signed an agreement to launch in June a new container transport service between Klaipeda and Kiev.
Intermodal Container Service and Containerships are the operators of the new route.
“More and more cargoes are being worldwide transported in containers, which records increasing every year. We expect that the new 36-hour cargo transport service on the route to provide new mobility opportunities for businesses in the countries,” Egidijus Lazauskas, the CEO of LG Cargo, said at the signing ceremony.
It is estimated that the container train will carry various goods, such as plastic and metal products. The train, which will run weekly, will transport more than 10,000 TEUs. Last year, the volume of containers transported on the direction of Kiev was only 5,000 TEUs.
In the future, the possibility of expanding this route to Odessa is being considered, thus connecting a rail link between Klaipėda Port and Odessa Port.
Rail freight traffic between Lithuania and Ukraine has increased by 3.3% in 2018. The volume of freight shipped from Ukraine to Lithuania doubled in the first four months of this year to 143,000 tons.
LG CARGO transports to Ukraine oil and petroleum products, chemical and mineral fertilizers, timber and other products, while the largest share of vegetable and mineral products, ferrous metals, is shipped from Ukraine.
