Violeta Bulc, the European Commissioner for Mobility and Transport and the management of the European Investment Bank welcomed the expansion of cooperation between Ukraine and the EU and invited Ukraine to participate in projects under the Connecting Europe Facility mechanism.
“Ukraine can participate in joint projects with EU Member States concerning cross-border infrastructure and it will also be possible to create joint projects to improve the port infrastructure, including the Azov region. Joining Connecting Europe Facility has become another important step towards full integration of transport infrastructure into the EU,” Ukraine Minister of Infrastructure, Volodymyr Omelyan, said.
Under CEF, Ukraine can implement the construction and improvement of railway routes running through the territory of Ukraine, connecting with the European railway network through Poland, Romania, Slovakia or Hungary.
During a meeting between Violeta Bulc, the European Commissioner for Mobility and Transport and Ukraine’s Minister of Infrastructure it was discussed important issues of Ukraine-EU cooperation in the field of transport and infrastructure, in particular Ukraine’s joining to the CEF funding instrument, EU assistance in the restoring of the Azov Sea infrastructure, the development of the Rhine-Danube and Orient/East-Med Corridor related to the European TEN-T network, expansion of aviation and railway connections with the EU.
We remind you that this year, a High Level Agreement on the extension of the TEN-T Maps was signed with Eastern Partnership states and after approval of the Indicative TEN-T Action Plan by the EU and the World Bank. According to the Action Plan, EUR 4.5 billion is the total investment of Ukraine’s transport projects within the next decade.
“Ukraine welcomes IFI’s, namely the EIB, to actively participate in these investments and plans to use PPP investments for these aims. Ukraine is also exploring the possibility of the use of the CEF financial instruments in joining transport infrastructure projects with neighboring EU member states,” Omelyan said.
During a meeting between the Minister Omelyan , the Director-General for Mobility and Transport, Henrik Hololei, and Vazil Hudak, Vice-President of EIB, it was discussed the implementation of joint projects on modernisation and improvement the safety of the road network, electrification of the railway, reconstruction of the airport infrastructure and attraction of investments in the maritime and river industry.
