PKP Polish Railway Lines is preparing the detailed design for the the reconstruction of the diametral line between Zachodnia (West station) and Wschodnia (East station) stations which will increase train capacity.
The reconstruction of the tracks will enable the creation of direct rail connections on Piaseczno – Legionowo and Legionowo – Chopin Airport routes.
The project also envisages the construction of a tunnel and a tram stop will be constructed under the Warszawa Zachodnia station, increasing city’s multimodal services.
At Warszawa Zachodnia station, the platforms will be erected and covered, elevators and escalators will be installed, the underground passage will be extended and rest areas for travelers and ticket offices will be created.
At Warszawa Wschodnia station, the roof and the platforms will be completely reconstructed,
Under the project, Warsaw Commuter Railway station (Warsaw Śródmieście) will be reconstructed, together with the existing underground passage to the Warsaw Central, and a passage connection to the metro system will be constructed, facilitating transport transfers to the public transport system.
“PKP Polish Railway Lines is developing the detailed designs for the redevelopment of the diametral city line. Thanks to this project, the trains frequency and level of security will increase due to the new traffic control devices. The capital will gain better rail connections for the next several decades,” said Ireneusz Merchel, the President of the Management Board of PKP PLK.
As part of the design work, PKP PLK is also considering the construction of a new bus stop at the Charles de Gaulle roundabout. The new platforms under the roundabout would create a completely new interchange in the city center. The railway will have tram, metro and bus connections.
In 2018, PKP Polish Railway Lines EUR 6.6 million contract (PLN 27.6 million) for the needed documentation on Warsaw diametrial line modernisation project.
The value of the project is EUR 250 million and is expected to be completed in 2022.
