The Government of Canada announced a USD 749 billion (CAD 1 billion) funding for two LRT projects in Edmonton. For these projects, the Government of Alberta is contributing USD 876 million (CAD 1.17 billion) and the City of Edmonton is providing USD 528.8 million (CAD 706 million).
The funds will be invested for Valley Line West LRT and Metro Line Northwest extension.
The Valley Line West LRT project consists of the second and next stage of the Valley Line construction. The project involves extending the line by 14 km from downtown Edmonton to the west-end community of Lewis Farms. Through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Plan, the Government of Canada is providing USD 710 million (CAD 948 million) for the Valley Line West LRT, adding to the USD 779 million (CARD 1.04 billion) funding commitment from the province in November 2018. Once all the funding is in place, it will take about 1 year to select a contractor for the Valley Line West LRT project, and another 5 to 6 years to complete construction. This is the second stage of the Valley Line, a 27-km line that will operate between Mill Woods in southeast Edmonton and Lewis Farms in west Edmonton.
The Metro Line Northwest LRT extension project is the first stage of an expansion of the Metro Line and involves extending the line by 1.5 km from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology to the Blatchford development. The extension will help reduce travel times as the city grows, and vehicle congestion increases.
