In 2018, Russian Railways purchased 597 locomotives, investing RUB 79.3 billion (almost USD 1.2 billion). The company acquired 348 electric locomotives of which, 308 locomotives for freight transport (110 2ES6-type locomotives, 10 2ES10, 121 2ES5K, 44 3ES5K; 13 3ES4K, 10 4ES5K) and 40 for passenger services (3 EP1M units, 30 EP2K units and 6 EP20 units).
249 diesel locomotives were purchased, of which 8 TEP70BS-type vehicles for passenger transport and 97 2TE25KM locomotives for freight transport services and 144 shunting locomotives.
In 2018, Russian Railways’ rolling stock fleet amounted 20,800 locomotives, of which 11,8 thousand freight locomotives (diesel and electric), 5,9 thousand diesel shunting locomotives and 3,1 thousand electric and diesel passenger locomotives.
By 2030, RZD intends to invest RUB 3.1 trillion (USD 46.4 billion) on acquiring new rolling stock. USD 14.77 billion (RUB 986 billion) is the total estimated value for 23,300 locomotives.
In 2018, Russian Railways transported 1.155 billion passengers, an increase of 3.4% compared to 2017. Passenger turnover on the Russian Railways’ network in 2018 increased by 5.2% compared to the previous year and amounted to 129.3 billion passenger-km.
On freight transport segment, in 2018, RZD transported 1.2896 billion tonnes, a 2.2% increase than in the previous year. Freight turnover amounted to 2,596.4 billion tariff ton-km, an increase of 4.2%.
