MÁV-START and Stadler have signed a contract about the delivery of eight additional six-car double-decker KISS EMU trains. The new trains will enter service expectedly in the first half of 2021. With this order MÁV-START increases its double decker fleet to 19 KISS trains.
The large capacity trainsets will open a new chapter in the history of the Hungarian railways, because they will be the first double-decker EMU to operate commercially in the country. The new trains will operate in the most frequented lines of the suburbs of the capital between Budapest-Vác-Szob and Budapest-Cegléd-Szolnok.
MÁV-START and Stadler signed a framework agreement last year for the delivery of up to 40 units, which can be exercised in the form of different delivery contracts during the following eight years. Together with the current agreement and the contract for the delivery of eleven units signed in 2017, MÁV has ordered a total of 19 units from the available 40, and its objective is to call the remaining 21 units too. The project is financed by the Integrated Transport Operational Programme (ITOP) of the European Union.
The 155.88 meters long, 2.8 meters wide and 4.6 meters high multiple units will consist of six carriages. The trains will seat 600 people comfortably, that is 50% more passengers compared to a single-decker unit with the same length. In the multifunctional areas the trains will offer space for four wheelchairs, as well as twelve bicycles or five strollers. The new vehicles, which have been designed according to the latest safety standards, will be equipped with EVM and ETCS Level-2 train control systems, making them able to run at a top speed of 160 km/h on the modernised railway lines of Hungary. Passenger comfort will be further enhanced by a state-of the-art passenger information system, cutting edge air conditioning, free WIFI and an exceptionally smooth ride quality.
