Philippines’ Department of Budget and Management awarded OC Global, a Japanese consortium, a USD 210 million general consultant contract for the construction of Metro Manila Subway, Phase 1.
OC Global comprises six Japanese companies: Oriental Consultants Global, Tokyo Metro Company, Katahira & Engineers International, Pacific Consultants, Tonichi Engineering Consultants and Metro Development Company.
The first phase envisages the construction of a line linking three stations starting in the Central Zone at Mindanao Avenue – Quirino Highway, Tandang Sora, and North Avenue station. All these stations will be constructed in Quezon City, northeast of Manila. This metro section is expected to be completed in 2022.
This is country’s first metro project which will have 29 km and 13 underground stations passing four Metro Manila cities – Quezon, Pasig, Taguig and Parañaque. The new line will provide transport services from Quezon City, in the northern part of Metro Manila, to Parañaque, in the southern part, accommodating the increasing transport needs and alleviating serious traffic congestion in Metro Manila.
The metro system will completely operational in 2025.
In March, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Government of Philippines signed a USD 923 million (JPY 104.53 billion) loan agreement for the first phase of Metro Manila Subway project, linking Metro Manila on a North-South axis.
In September 2017, the National Economic and Development Authority approved the first phase of the project with an initial needed investment of USD 6.3 billion.
