The European Investment Bank may provide a EUR 115 million loan for the modernisation of three rail sections on Púchov – Žilina railway line in north-west Slovakia.
The total value of the project is EUR 534 million and envisages the modernization of Puchov – Povazska Tepla, Dolni Hricov – Zilina and Vah – Strechno sections, totaling 33 km of rail lines.
The project also includes the reconstruction of the Bytča station and installation of new signalling systems.
The contracts for the works at sections Puchov – Povazska Tepla and Dolni Hricov – Zilina sections are already signed. For Púchov – Žilina modernization, Slovakia received European co-financing, through Cohesion Fund, under the programming period 2007-2013.
The project will improve the speed and quality of rail connections in the main transport corridors of Slovakia between Bratislava – Zilina and Zilina – Kosice and will enhance sustainable transport, in line with EU objectives.
The project will deliver domestic and international benefits. Passenger and freight traffic will benefit from the resulting infrastructure immediately upon the project completion. The project is located in a convergence region, and thereby will improve accessibility and potentially facilitate regional development.
The railway modernisation is part of the planned upgrading of the Bratislava – Žilina railway track, which is a TEN-T Core network, and will allow trains to reach speeds of up to 160km/h.
