The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a loan agreement with the Government of the Philippines for a EUR 295.8 million (JPY 38 billion) for the rehabilitation of Manila MRT Line 3.
MRT 3 rehabilitation project has a total value of EUR 368 million (PHP 22 billion) and it will be launched by the end of this year. The project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2021, when the rehabilitated rolling stock and rail systems are returned to service.
The objective of the project is to improve the safety and service level of MRT 3, which suffers from frequent operation disruptions and other problems, while promoting its use through rehabilitation of the line, thereby contributing to the mitigation of the serious traffic congestion in Metro Manila.
The rehabilitation will increase the number of trainsets in operation from 15 to 18 trainsets per hour, increase the maximum speed to 60 km/h, and decrease headway to 200 seconds.
MRT 3 is an 18-year-old rail line that connects the north and south ends of Metro Manila.
