Bern launches tender for 50 new trams

Bernmobil, the public transport operator in the Swiss capital, launched a tender for the procurement of 50 light rail, low-floor vehicles, to be introduced on Bern’s narrow-gauge tram network starting with 2023.
The value of the whole order of 50 light rail vehicles is estimated at CHF 100 million (EUR 87.5 million) and, at the same time, it is the biggest tram order Bernmobil made so far.
Bernmobil operator said it had reached an agreement with Bern Solothurn Regional Transport (BSRT) for the procurement of new such vehicles to replace the obsolete ones on Line 6.
The initial order is of 20 new bidirectional light rail vehicles. The trams will be 43-m long and will have 52 seats each.
The contract will include the option of delivering another 30 vehicles to extend the rolling stock fleet dedicated to Bern – Ostermundingen tram project, which includes the extension of Line 9 from Wabern to Kleinwabern.
The suppliers will submit offers by March 2019 and Bernmobil will select and announce the winner of the tender by the end of 2019. The delivery of the initial order of 20 trams will take place between the beginning of 2023 and the autumn of 2024.
