Next phase to be rolled out starting this December and will pass through Avenue de la Liberté, an area listed as UNESCO World Heritage since 1994.
It crosses UNESCO’s buffer zone between Place de Bruxelles and Place de Paris. The organization notes that “there is no problem with the extension of a tramway to the station whose trains do not encumber the landscape more than buses or automobiles. On the contrary, it is a progress in urban life.
Works for the extension of the line will take place in the center of Luxembourg, on avenue Émile-Reuter and Avenue de la Liberté.
By the end of 2020, the tram will run on this new section from Place de l’Étoile to Central Station, serving four new stations. Before that, the public space on this route will be entirely refitted. “The metro networks will be diverted from the footprint of the future tram platform, strengthened and/or renewed”, according to the needs of the network, said Luxtram.
In order to minimize the impact of the construction site on traffic, Luxtram assures, the works will be carried out in several stages.
In parallel, an additional 12 CAF trams were ordered to meet the needs of the next extension to the south, via the central station. It will still take a third order to operate the entire line by 2021, the necessary fleet being 32 to 33 trains. The 12 new trams are to be delivered in 2019.
The first section of the tramline, between the Red Bridge and Luxexpo, went into service in December 2017; it has eight stops, and two interchanges. So far, the network’s managers report very positive results – more than 17,000 passengers use the service daily, whereas the estimate was for just 8,400.
