The West Midlands Rail Executive (WMRE) launched a draft 30-year strategy to revolutionise rail services across the West Midlands over the next three decades.
The consultation over its strategy will be opened until November 19, 2018.
“Our Strategy shapes the new era for rail travel by West Midlanders. It evidences our ambitious plans to work together with Midlands Connect and the rail industry to transform the train services and physical network to support the needs of the region,” Malcolm Holmes, executive director of WMRE said.
The strategy sets out both medium and long-term proposals for developing services, backed by clear economic evidence and highlights railways’ key role in connecting people and communities across the region. The strategy also sets WMRE’s ambitious plans to improve local rail services and stations and maximise the benefit of HS2.
The strategy has seven principal components, driven by their value to the West Midlands economy. It includes the West Midlands Railway franchise’s promised improvements including cross-Birmingham connectivity, new Camp Hill and Walsall-Wolverhampton services, new stations, more train capacity and reliable performance.
High train service frequency, the development of Midlands Rail Hub, between 2026 and 2032, the development of high-growth corridors, active support for delivery of both phases of High Speed 2 and supporting rail-freight development are strategy’s pillars.
