Qatar Ministry of Transport and Japanese rolling stock manufacturer Kinki Sharyo signed a contract for the supply of 35 additional trains for Doha Metro. With this contract, the total number of train sets for Doha Metro is 110 units.
The new trains will serve to increase the capacity of the metro system, especially when Qatar hosts the FIFA World Cup 2022. In addition, they will serve the future expansion of the Doha Metro lines, which Qatar Rail intends to carry out after the implementation of Phase 1 of the metro project. The future phases involve the construction of Blue Line and the expansion of the existing ones, with more than 60 additional stations and the first expansion will be completed by 2026.
“The Doha Metro project is one of the most important pillars of the comprehensive transport plan that we seek to achieve. This step will enhance the metro network’s capacity to transport a large number of individuals, which will in turn support the public transport network, especially when Qatar hosts the FIFA World Cup 2022, during which there will be high demand on the public transport systems,” Jassim Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti, Minister of Transport said.
In 2015, the consortium comprising Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Corporation, Hitachi, Kinki Sharyo and Thales was awarded the contract on the supply of platform screen doors, tracks, a railway yard, and systems for signalling, power distribution, telecommunications and tunnel ventilation and rolling stock. As part of the contract, Mitsubishi Corporation and Kinki Sharyo were responsible for the delivery of 75 three-car trains. The delivery started in the summer of 2017.
Currently, Qatar Railways implements the first phase of Doha Metro network, which envisages the construction of three out of the four lines (Red, Gold, and Green lines), served by 37 stations. These lines are expected to be open to the public by 2020.
