Lisbon tenders the acquisition of 14 new metro trains

Metropolitano de Lisboa launched the public tender for the purchase of 14 new metro trains, each consisting of three units. In addition, the Portuguese operator has launched a tender for the implementation of a a modern CBTC system for train signaling and control.
Moreover, Porto, the second largest city in Portugal, announced its intention to acquire 18 new metro trains, but the exact date for launching the tender has not been announced yet.
In Lisbon, the investment for the acquisition of the new rolling stock and the CBTC system amounts to EUR 127 million. The new metro trains will increase the network transport capacity by 20%.
They will need to be equipped with variable and flexible communication systems for passenger information, but also with safety and video surveillance systems. The new units will be much more comfortable and with improved accessibility for people with disabilities.
The new train signaling and control system will reduce the frequency between trains to four minutes.
Metropolitano de Lisboa estimates that the new metro trains will be delivered starting with 2022.
The Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa, who launched the public tender, then said that “the new project will contribute to a truly integrated transport system in the metropolitan area.”
“This is a fundamental step not only for the renewal of the rolling stock but also for changing the very old signalling system dating back to the 1970s,” Vitor Domingues dos Santos, president of the Metropolitano de Lisboa, said.
