The Spanish rail infrastructure manager, ADIF, has asked the European Investment Bank (EIB) for a EUR 600 million loan to finance the modernisation works of the suburban Cercanías networks in cities such as Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Asturias and Santander.
The entire budget of the works was estimated by ADIF at a value of EUR 1.52 billion and therefore the company requested financial support from the financial institution.
The works include renovating and upgrading civil engineering, railway lines, electrification and signaling systems and improvements in railway safety by eliminating level-crossings. In addition, the works also provide for improved access to railway stations.
Most of the works will take place on the existing infrastructure.
The purpose of this project is to increase the attractiveness of suburban railway services to encourage users to choose rail and not road transport, the first having considerable environmental benefits through reduced noise and less polluting emissions.
