The Prime Minister of Sweden, Stefan Löfven, Transport Minister, Tomas Eneroth, and Trafikverket director general Lena Erixon officially launched the Norrbotniabanan (North Bothnia Line) construction works.
“The business community in northern Sweden is crucial to our country. Also, here is large part of our natural resources, with an added value for the export and, along the coast from Umeå and north, 400,000 people living and working. Giving these circumstances, the transport infrastructure must be strong. A fully expanded North Bothnia Line will link not only North Sweden but our country too,” the Prime Minister said.
The North Bothnia Line is a new coastal railway line planned between Umeå and Luleå, with a length of 270 km. The North Bothnia Line is intended first of all to strengthen the country’s rail freight traffic, but also to enable passenger traffic between the cities along the coast of North Sweden.
The new railway line will connect to the current Bothnia Line and will be an important transport link within the European railway system. North Bothnia Line will cut transport costs of freight traffic by 30% and will halve travelling times for passengers, which will make conditions for commuting to work much better than they currently are.
