Newag to supply PKP Cargo new locomotives

PKP Cargo and Newag signed a letter of intend on the acquisition of Dragon2 locomotives, paving the negotiations for the purchase of three six-axle E6ACTa locomotives – DRAGON 2. According to PKP Cargo, if the talks are successful, the operator will receive the new locomotives by the end of this year.
“Dragon locomotives meet our expectations, as they are capable to transport heavy goods. This acquisition is part of our strategy on fleet development, by purchasing new locomotives and modernise the existing ones,” Czesław Warsewicz, the president of PKP Cargo said.
The rolling stock investments will allow PKP Cargo to answer transport demand within the next years, as the company recorded a 20% increase in 2017.
In April, the two companies signed a contract for the modernisation of 60 diesel locomotives, SM48 series. Estimated value of the contract is approximately PLN 388 million (EUR 90.2 million). Under this contract, Newag will start the modernisation in October 2018 and all vehicles must be modernised by 2021. The modernisation will consist of constructing a new bodywork in a module technology, replacement of the generator unit, the braking installation, as well as auxiliary machines and devices. Locomotives will be equipped with a modern steering system and a new ergonomic operator’s cabin, and will be adjusted to one-person operation. The contract also includes the supply of software and a licence required to operate the locomotive, and a set of specialist tools for diagnostics and repairs of the diesel engine.
