The rolling stock manufacturer will deliver in its home country nine tram-trains to be operated by Lugano Railways (Ferrovie Luganesi). The contract is worth CHF 47 million (EUR 41 million) and deliveries will begin starting 2020.
Initially, the new vehicles will run on the existing S60, narrow-gauge railway which connects Lugano to Ponte Tresa. Each tram-train will be 45-m long and will be equipped with multi-functional spaces, air-conditioning and internal and external CCTV systems. The vehicles will be 100% low-floor. Lugano tram-train network will be extended and auxiliary works will begin in 2020 and will be completed in 2027. These works include the construction of a 4-km section to provide direct connection from Lugano to Molinazzo. A 2.3km railway tunnel will be built on the new route and the station will be located under the main railways of Lugano Centro rail station. Moreover, a 1.9-km long branch will be built following the route to north, from Molinazzo to Manno.
New routes could be built on long-term, north of Lugano Centro to Cornaredo and south to Pian Scairolo. Also, an extension of the railway from Manno to Lamone station is planned.
Lugano Railways carries 2.5 million passengers/year. Lugano is located in the south of Switzerland, in Ticino canton, close to the Italian border.
