The Portuguese Government approved the investment of EUR 210 million to increase the capacity of the metro transport network in Lisbon. The projects will be carried out in several phases.
Thus, the first phase will be launched in July and includes a tender for the delivery of 14 metro trains of three units each.
The acquisition is estimated at EUR 110 million and financed with state-budget funds.
The rest of EUR 100 million will be used for the modernisation of the signalling systems and train control and safety equipment. Some of them are very old, being in service since the ‘70s. The EUR 100 million will not come from the state budget, but from the Environment Fund.
Three metro lines will be modernised: the Green, the Blue and the Yellow lines.
It is important to say that Lisbon metro, next to Porto Metro, will be able to use around EUR 180 million from the Cohesion Fund to finance the extension of the lines.
