In April 2017, Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas announced the tender on Riga railway bridge, railway embankment and Riga Central passenger station. Under the procurement process, 7 international consortia submitted their offers. Last year, Cowi and PLH Arkitekter won the contract for the design of Riga Central Station.
Riga Central Station is one of the most complicated projects of Rail Baltica as it is currently operational, but has to be adapted to EU standards, including by converting the infrastructure to standard gauge. It requires a combination of the two railway systems and the existing activity can’t be stopped or interrupted as currently is a multimodal hub of the city. In addition, the project is a challenge as it is a historic centre.
