Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan has announced a AUD 1.6 billion (USD 1.2 billion) package for new locally built railcars. The package of 41 six-car trains, totaling 246 railcars, will have a 50 per cent local content requirement and will enable the comprehensive expansion of Perth’s public transport system.
In the first stage, 17 six-car trains (102 cars) will be ordered for planned expansions of the Transperth network, including the proposed Ellenbrook line, for which AUD 340 million (USD 261.4 million) has been budgeted.
The remaining 24 six-car trains (144 cars) will be used to replace existing A-series models on the heritage Fremantle, Armadale and Midland lines, which are due to reach the end of their operating life in the coming years.
Delivery of the first 17 six-car sets is due in 2021, while the additional trains will be built between 2023 and 2026. A shortlist of companies will progress to an interactive tendering process before a final supplier is chosen early next year.
