A memorandum of understanding has been signed by Maurizio Gentile, CEO of the Italian rail group Ferrovie dello Stato, and Pietro Spirito, president of Central Tyrrhenian Sea Port Authority (Autorita’ di Sistema Portuale del Mar Tirreno Centrale – AdSP) for the infrastructural upgrading of the port of Naples.
The agreement establishes a joint working group that will identify over the next seven months the infrastructural development actions necessary to connect the port of Naples with the Italian railway network. In particular, the working group will investigate a design solution that involves the construction of a new railway station and a 750-metre railway terminal near the current San Giovanni Barra structure in Naples. The working group will complete the feasibility study by the end of October 2018,.
“The protocol we have signed has a twofold objective: to define the guidelines for the project to build a 750-metre track in the eastern area of the port, close to the new container terminal, as envisaged in the recently approved Master Plan; and establish agreements that allow us to have the strategic support of a great partner, such as RFI, in the implementation of our Master Plan,” Pietro Spirito said.
This project will increase the share of freight traffic to and from the Port of Naples, one of the Core Ports of the European Core Corridor Ten-T network.
