In a ceremony organized at Kermanshah railway station, the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani officially opened the Firouzan-Kermanshah railway line, linking tehe major city near the border with Iraq to the national railway network. “I announce the start of first trip of Kermanshah train from this beautiful city to Mashhad,” the president said.
The west railway project starts from Samangan Station for 605 km and passes through Malayer, Nahavand, Kangavar, Sahneh, Kermanshah, Islamabad-e Gharb, Gilan-e Gharb and Qasr-e Shirin and reaches to Khosravi town located on the border of Iran and Iraq. It is then connected to the port of Lattakia through Khanaqin, Baghdad, Mosul, Qamishli, Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa and Aleppo.
The project also included the construction of tunnels with a total length of 3 km and seven large bridges.
Recently, the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development announced that within the next ten years, the country needs USD 50 billion to modernise and expand its railway network.
