Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Government of Philippines signed a EUR 803 million (JPY 104.53 billion) loan agreement for the first phase of Metro Manila Subway Project.
The project envisages the construction of a 35-km line and 13 underground stations linking Metro Manila on a North-South axis. The new line will provide transport services from Quezon City, in the northern part of Metro Manila, to Parañaque, in the southern part, accommodating the increasing transport needs and alleviating serious traffic congestion in Metro Manila. The project is estimated to be completed in 2025, when the facilities are put into service.
JICA’s loan will fund the construction works on the underground tunnels, including the stations and other public works, the acquisition of railway systems and rolling stock as well as the procurement of the needed consulting services on the project.
Under the special terms for the Economic Partnership, it is expected that Japanese technologies and goods such as underground tunnel excavation method, tunnel construction technique in narrow space, signaling systems and rolling stocks will be utilized for the project.
In September 2017, the National Economic and Development Authority approved the first phase of the project with an initial needed investment of EUR 5.55 billion.
