German bus start-up Flixbus announced that it would begin offering two long-distance train services, the “Flixtrains”, on the route Hamburg-Cologne from 24 March and on the route Stuttgart-Berlin from April. Prices will start from 9.99 euros ($12), lower than those of Deutsche Bahn.
“We already proved with Flixbus that mobility doesn’t have to be expensive. With the integration of Flixtrain, the options for German travellers are becoming even more attractive,” company founder Andre Schwaemmlein said.
The company will follow a model similar to its bus service by partnering with local train operators, and it is hoping to use its FlixBus brand recognition to drive customers to the new rail service. The Flixbus company will not own its Flixtrains, partnering instead with Czech rail operator Leo Express and Nuremberg operator BahnTouristikExpress.
The company’s goal is to have 28 destinations in Germany by the end of April 2018.
