Portugal’s Prime Minister Antónia Costa, accompanied by the Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy and the European Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc, launched a tender for a railway link between the town of Evora, south-east of Lisbon, to Elvas, near the Spanish border. The railway line will allow the two countries to be connected by train, especially important for freight.
The new 100 kilometre connection between Évora and Elvas should start to be built in March 2019. The project is budgeted at EUR 509, approx. half of the cost being paid for by the EU.
“This investment will simultaneously contribute to improved conditions for private investment, internationalization and the export of our products and services,” said Prime Minister Antónia Costa.
Prior to the launch of the tender, the delegation visited Elvas’ former train station to unveil a plaque symbolizing the start of modernizing work on a rail section running from Elvas to Caia, on the Spanish border. This 11-km section is known as “the missing link” in the international southern corridor project, a scheme designed to link Portugal’s port of Sines with distribution centers at the heart of Europe.
