State-owned company Etihad Rail, in charge of managing the development and operation of the UAE’s national railway network, is preparing to launch construction tenders for the second phase of the railway network. The tender for the second phase is thus restarted two years after the process was suspended pending a review of its timing and delivery.
The 628-km long second phase of the project will connect the railway network to Mussafah, to Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi and Jebel Ali Port in Dubai, and to the Saudi and Omani borders.
Etihad Rail seeks to appoint project management and engineering consultants to start the tendering process for the construction of the second phase. Etihad Rail will update and complete the design and open the tenders to start construction in the coming months. No other details were provided about a timeline either for tendering or contract awards.
The 264-kilometre stage 1 of the project started commercial operations in 2015.
The Etihad Rail project is part of the planned six-nation wide GCC Railway Network. It will link the UAE to Saudi Arabia and Oman.
We remind that commercial activity on the railway network commenced in December 2015 and at the end of 2017, Etihad Rail has transported more than 15 million tonnes of granulated sulphur for Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.
The 264-km standard gauge network links Shah and Habshan to the port of Ruwais.
