Munich Airport railway tunnel contract awarded

PORR has been granted by Flughafen München GmbH (Munich Airport) the contract for the extension of the existing railway tunnel at Munich Airport, which will be expanded by around 1.8 kilometres to the east. The contract value is around EUR 110 million.
Munich Airport’s rail access currently consists of two railway lines heading west. The Erdinger Ringschluss is a 30.2 km-long, double-track railway line – part of which will be newly built – which will connect Freising and Erding via Munich Airport. The tunnel extension underneath the airport will serve as an important public transport link in the north of Munich. The Erdinger Ringschluss will significantly enhance the performance and connectivity of the existing rail infrastructure.
The contract includes construction of a tunnel with a length of approx. 1,555 m and a 306 m ramp structure. The tunnel will primarily be driven using the cut-and-cover method. The works will start this month. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2021.
“Our subsidiary in Germany, Stump Spezialtiefbau, will play a key role in executing the project. PORR made an impression in the tender phase with its customised solutions, thereby achieving significant savings compared to the original construction works,” said Karl-Heinz Strauss, CEO of PORR AG.
