BNSF invests in New Mexico infrastructure

BNSF Railway Company will invest USD 80 million in New Mexico for infrastructure maintenance to ensure safe and reliable transport services. The project envisages the replacing and upgrading the main components for the tracks on which BNSF trains operate including rail, rail ties and ballast. The remainder of the plan in New Mexico will go toward track expansion projects, including one on the Gallup Subdivision.
Between Belen and Dalies, the company will begin a two-year project to construct 16 km of third main line to enhance capacity along the Southern Transcon route. The 2018 maintenance programme in New Mexico includes approximately 2570 km of track surfacing and/or undercutting work as well as the replacement of nearly 24 km of rail and more than 110,000 ties. BNSF has invested approximately USD 545 million to expand and maintain its network in the state over the past five years.
“The Southern Transcon is the rail equivalent of a superhighway, making it an ideal route for high-priority, containerized traffic. The construction of the third main line between Belen and Dalies as well as scheduled maintenance activities for 2018 show our dedication to our customers to provide a safe, efficient and reliable network,” Keary Walls, general manager of operations, Southwest Division said.
The 2018 planned capital investments in the state are part of BNSF’s USD 3.3 billion network-wide capital expenditure programme announced last month.
