South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) appointed VolkerRail to carry out the second phase of the Sheffield’s tram track replacement works. The works are expected to start in April and carry on across the network, during the summer periods, for the next three years. In total, 11.5 km of tracks will be replaced. This year work will be focused between Middlewood and Hillsborough.
“The Sheffield Supertram is an important part of Sheffield’s public transport network, with 12 million journeys made each year. It is a key asset, providing a sustainable, environmentally-friendly alternative to the car and helping to support economic growth alongside other transport programmes in the city”, SYPTE’s executive director Stephen Edwards said.
The project, to extend the network’s life by replacing track sections that have suffered wear and tear on the street running rails, is a continuation of the first phase of the Supertram rail replacement scheme, which VolkerRail completed between 2013 and 2015.
