Abellio Rail Cymru (ARC) has withdrawn from the bid for the next Wales and Borders rail franchise after it has been unable to overcome the collapse of its bidding partner Carillion. Abellio took its decision after much of Carillion’s rail assets were bought by Amey Rail, which is involved in one of the rival bids. Abellio’s exit from the process leaves just Hong Kong’s MTR and joint venutre KeolisAmey, which runs the London Docklands Light Railway, bidding to run the franchise, which will operate the South Wales Metro.
The Wales and Borders franchise will be awarded by the Welsh Government though Transport for Wales in May, and services under the new franchise will start from October.
