Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Teodor Melescanu, and Hungarian counterpart, Peter Szijjarto, agreed on the development of a high-speed railway between Cluj-Napoca and Budapest, according to a press release of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The Hungarian Government approved a HUF 1 billion financing (EUR 3.3 million) financing for the feasibility study of this project. The Hungarian Government has no objection against Romania’s plan of extending the high-speed railway up to Bucharest”, said Peter Szijjarto.
Previously, Peter Szijjarto had declared that the project of a high-speed train to link Budapest to Bucharest via Cluj had to be a priority.
This is not the first such initiative of the two neighbouring countries. In 2007, the governments of Romania and Hungary signed a Joint Declaration on building a high-speed railway on Budapest – Curtici – Bucharest – Constanta route in Sibiu. The project had been resumed from time to time and had even been included in several government programmes, the latest being the 2013-2016 government programme, but with no actual progress so far.
