EU funding for Taranto – Bari modernisation

The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is investing EUR 67.5 million in modernisation works on the railway line connecting the port of Taranto to the port of Bari in the south Italian region of Puglia.
This section, which forms part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), is on the Adriatic railway line that connects the south of Italy to the north. The works are scheduled for completion at the end of 2018.
“As well as promoting an environmentally friendly mode of transport, this EU-funded project will encourage tourism and trade in Southern Italy by reducing the journey time for passengers and goods, while improving safety for traffic,” Commissioner for Regional Policy, Corina Cretu, said.
Four years ago, the European Commission approved EUR 115 million from ERDF for two railway projects in Puglia. Under the financial commitment, Bari-Taranto project envisaged the electrification of the 121 km long Bari-Taranto Railway Network, running parallel to the Bari-Taranto standard railway line.
