DB Cargo Bulgaria, a subsidiary of German railway company Deutsche Bahn’s freight division, said its cargo trains will start using only renewable energy for their operations, starting from 2018. „Our decision to only use renewable energy for our freight transport operations is one more step towards achieving sustainable development of the Bulgarian and European rail transport,” Lyubomir Garchev, CEO of DB Cargo Bulgaria, announced. DB Cargo Bulgaria’s decision to use renewable energy is part of the company’s environmentally responsible development strategy. DB Cargo Bulgaria employs around 280 people. The company’s fleet for freight traction activities comprises 13 electrical and 5 diesel locomotives. On a larger scale, wide-Europe, Deutsche Bahn intends to reduce the CO₂ emissions of all its global transport operations by 30% by 2020. This is 50 % more than the old goal which was to reduce the emissions by 20 percent until 2020. By 2050, DB has set a goal of achieving rail transport that is completely CO₂-free. In addition to increasing the percentage of renewable energy used in rail transport and introducing modern vehicles, energy-efficient driving is one of the key measures that can be used to significantly reduce CO2 emissions. Up to 80% less CO2 is emitted when transporting goods by rail, and DB customers can benefit even further through expoliting the company’s fleet of ‘green trains’ – powered by renewable energy – known as the DBeco plus.
