Rwanda’s President, Paul Kagame, and his Tanzanian counterpart, John Pombe Magufuli, signed the agreement on the construction of a standard gauge line from Isaka, Tanzania, to Kigali, the capital of Rwanda.
The line will have a length of 400 km and will link Dar-es-Salaam and Kigali via Isaka, improving freight transport from Tanzania’s port.
According to the studies conducted by East African Community (EAC), the Tanzanian railway route would cost Rwanda about USD 800-900 million. Until now, Tanzanian government committed USD 3 billion (TZS 7 trillion) for standard gauge construction in two phases, from Dar es Salaam to Makutupora (in Dodoma, Tanzania’s capital).
“The railway construction is yet a new momentum that will help the two countries economy to expand,” Rwanda’s President said.
Both presidents are committed to seek loans to speed up the construction of the railway line linking Rwanda and Tanzania.
