Air-rail link for Volgograd

A 1.2 km railway line linking Gumrak station to Volgograd International Airport will be constructed, Russian Railways announced. The project will enable passengers to travel between the suburban station of Volgograd-1 and the city’s airport by electric train in about 30 minutes.
In addition to the airport terminals, a 176-metre island platform will be built and fitted with a canopy, navigation, benches and urns along its entire length. Office spaces and a row of turnstiles will also be built there. Two of the eight turnstiles will be wide enough to allow the passage of wheelchairs.
On the basis of an audit of the cost estimate documentation, experts from the Rostov branch of Russia’s Glavgosexpertiza concluded that the cost of the construction work on the railway track along the Gumrak-Airport section had been assessed reliably and complied with the current regulations. The experts had previously issued a positive conclusion following a review of the design documentation and the results of engineering research.
The value of the project is RUB 271.8 million (USD 4.65 million) and will be financed by Russian Railways.
The project also provides for the construction of a railway crossing with the simultaneous reconstruction of the road. The necessary infrastructure will be built all along the line of linear construction, with engineering communications laid and transformer substations and other auxiliary facilities installed.
