Queensland’s Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced that Cross River Rail early works are underway, with construction activity starting at the site of the new Woolloongabba Station.
“This is an important milestone as it marks the start of official works for this historic infrastructure project for Queensland,” the Premier said.
The AUD 5.4 billion (USD 4.3 billion) project, fully funded by the Government, is a transformational 10.2 km link from Dutton Park to Bowen Hills, with 5.9 km of tunnel under the Brisbane River and CBD. The project involves the construction of new stations at Boggo Road, Woolloongabba, Albert Street, Roma Street and Exhibition showgrounds.
The project will connect to both northern and southern rail networks from day one of operation, providing significant benefits to commuters from both directions. This second CBD rail river crossing will ease congestion and improve network reliability, allowing more people to access jobs and services in the CBD with shorter journey times.
The new line is estimated to be put into commercial services in 2023, and, by 2036, the capacity of the new line will be 90,000 passengers.
