Transport for New South Wales has announced that light rail construction will start in Hunter Street on 12 September, signalling the beginning of a major phase of works in the NSW Government’s AUD 660 million (usd 523 million) Revitalising Newcastle program. Newcastle Light Rail is a key part of Revitalising Newcastle and will provide a frequent and reliable travel option throughout the city centre, connect key activity precincts, reinvigorate Hunter and Scott streets, and open up great urban renewal opportunities.
The initial phase of light rail construction on Hunter Street will occur between Auckland and Darby Streets. Works will include relocating essential services such as water, gas, electricity and telecommunications, civil construction work including road reconfiguration and laying light rail track on the road. The project also includes creating new pedestrian and vehicle access points between Hunter Street and the harbour.
Light rail construction will be focused on multiple construction zones with each zone remaining open to pedestrians but closed to traffic. This will allow crews to get in, get the majority of the work done efficiently and minimise inconvenience. Work in this construction zone is due to be completed by the end of 2017.
