EUR 32 million for Stockholm Central Station overhaul

Trafikverket, Sweden’s Transport Authority, has awarded Sweco consulting company a contract for  redesigning and upgrading  Stockholm Central Station. The works will start this year and will be completed in 2022, but in order to ensure the functioning of the building throughout the works, they will be executed in stages. Trafikverket took the decision to overhaul the rail station in order to meet all passengers’ requirements.

The project envisages the reconstruction of the entire railway station and is described as “the most complex of its kind in Sweden’s railway history due to the size of the building, its location and to the fact that it is the busiest railway station in the country.”

Everything will be upgraded, from switchgears to point machines and turntables.  Waiting rooms will be upgraded and the platforms will be more accessible.

Sweco will prepare the necessary documentation, will perform analyzes, including railway station configuration programs. Sweco will also be able to issue the necessary documentation for organizing tenders in order to identify construction companies with whom to collaborate and work to support this extensive project.

The company estimates that modernisation works will amount to SEK 300 million (about EUR 32 million).

“We are pleased to work closely with the Swedish Transport Authority to create a modern railway and commuter center,” Sweco President, Åsa Bergman, said.
