Federal funding for Caltrain electrification

US Federal Transportation Administration has announced that intends to allot USD 647 million for Caltrain electrification. “With the Caltrain project having met all of the statutory requirements, the FTA intends to sign a full funding grant agreement,” the FTA said.
The USD 1.9 billion project involves the electrification of the existing corridor between San Francisco and San Jose, including the installation of Positive Train Control system.
Currently, over USD 1.3 billion has been secured to modernize Caltrain and operate electric trains that will expand capacity and deliver faster, more frequent service to Peninsula communities. The project is ready to start construction, and the final step is approval of the federal grant.
Last year, the board of the company approves the USD 1.25 billion contracts to begin the works on the project. Balfour Beatty Infrastructure was awarded a USD 697 million contract for the design and construction of the corridor’s electrification infrastructure. For supply of needed rolling stock, Stadler US, Inc won a USD 551 million contract that involves the delivery of 16 six-car Kiss double-deck EMUs, with an option for an additional 96 cars.
