The Italian Railways (FS) and the Uruguayan State Railways Administration (AFE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), in Montevideo, to collaborate and exchange knowledge for the development of integrated rail systems, the provision of rolling stock, training of personnel and technical assistance.
The agreement is based on the Uruguayan Strategic Development Plan 2017-2022, which contemplates large investments in infrastructure and rolling stock, with the aim of modernising the rail system as a whole to be able to continue with strategy of development of priority areas.
The Uruguayan Railways Administration has identified the 270-kilometer Paso de los Toros – Montevideo line as a priority to carry out the first technological updating and modernisation and infrastructure capacity that allow an increase of the commercial speed, for freight trains,of up to 80 km/h.
The rail network of Uruguay is about 3,000 kilometers in length, single track and without electrification. Approximately 1,600 kilometers of dedicated railways are currently in service, mainly freight transport, while passenger traffic is concentrated in the Montevideo area.
