The architectural design for Jeddah Public Transportation Program (JPTP) is 30 percent completed, the Governor of Makkah Province Khaled Al-Faisal said.
The design include metro and light rail system, the Corniche tram system, as well as sea ferries, park and ride facilities and a bus network. The estimated value of the projects is USD 12 billion and authorities seek to involve the private sector. “We have a huge project for Jeddah on which the state has spent huge sums on studies and now it is ready for execution and available for the private sector,” the governor said.
The strategy is projected to be an important solutions to the traffic congestion in the city where cars number more than 3 million. Currently, less than 2 percent of people use public transport daily, but it is projected to increase to 25 percent.
The Jeddah Development and Urban Regeneration Company will manage the implementation of the strategy. The urban rail transport projects include the construction of 4 metro lines with a total length of 150 km, 3 light metro lines, with a total length of 37 km, the 16 km Corniche tram. In addition will be constructed a 159 km commuter rail network, connecting terminus stations of metro and tram lines with the main axes and highways through the ring road. This includes 24 main stations.
