Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) has completed the feasibility study for the expansion of the rail link to more parts of Gauteng, such as Soweto and Mamelodi. The project involves a 200 km rail expansion within the network. Some new sections include the railway connection from Lanseria (south of Johannesburg) to Cosmo City (west) and Sandton, a new line between OR Tambo International Airport and Boksburg. In addition, according to Gauteng’s Human Settlements MEC Paul Mashatile, the expansion project will involve more routes, including to Soweto (Johannesburg metropolitan area) and Mamelodi (near Pretoria).
For the project, GMA has applied for National Treasury approval as a public-private partnership project.
Currently, the Gautrain network is nearly 80km long with various journey options available between key stations
Under the expansion project, Gauteng government has shortlisted three bidders to supply 12-four coaches new EMUs for the Gautrain rail link. The winner will be announced by the middle of the year.
