UK: Greater Anglia starts Class 170 fleet upgrade

05-ukGreater Anglia commenced an upgrade of its Class 170 fleet, which will provide rail passengers in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire with cleaner trains with more seats and plug points. The train operator’s eight three-carriage and four two-carriage trains, in operation on routes across the Greater Anglia network will receive a complete overhaul.
The project forsees adding six more seats on every three carriage train; installing plug sockets to allow people to charge laptops and smartphones while they travel; refurbishing seats; a refurbishment of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. The routes which will benefit from the upgrade include the Norwich-Cambridge, Ipswich-Cambridge, Ipswich-Lowestoft and Norwich-Lowestoft lines.
The project is expected to be completed in early 2018. The work is being carried out by Arriva Traincare at their facility in Crewe under contract to Porterbrook Leasing who are investing £5 million (5.8 million euros) into the upgrade, with the first train due to return to passenger service in the spring.
