The beginning of the preparation of the technical documentation for the third section Belgrade-Budapest railway will soon be launched, the Managing Director of Serbian Institute of Transportation (CIP), Milutin Ignjatovic, said to Novosti. This easiest section will link Novi Sad with Hungarian border and it is expected that works will start this spring.
The Belgrade-Budapest railway project is implemented into three phases. The technical documentation for Stara Pazova-Novi Sad section (the middle one) that is financed by the Russian loan, has been completed. The preliminary design for the span from Belgrade to Stara Pazova is completed, and the main design and the detailed design are currently being prepared.
The project involves the reconstruction of the existing single-track railway and the construction of the second-track allowing trains to run at 200 km/h.
The railway project includes the development of 370 km of railway, including works for the construction, extension and modernisation of the railway. Around 335 km of the total length will require conversion and electrification works and 166 km of railway will be modernised on Hungary’s territory.
“On the Batajnica-Stara Pazova section, the railway will be reconstructed for the function of joining and separating two two-track railways and separating the passenger and the cargo transport in the Belgrade hub area. The electrical engineering part of the project was prepared in cooperation with Chinese companies. The State Audit Institution needs to carry out the control, and the preparation of the main and the detailed design is in progress. The estimated time of the construction is around three years,” Ignjatovic said.
The total cost of the Budapest-Belgrade rail line project could reach EUR 2.2 billion and the Russian and Chinese construction workers should complete the project within 5 years.
