Davao Monorail proposal, in the Philippines, to be presented

Davao-monorail_maxresdefaultPhiltram Transportation Consortium, a transport company based in Manila, will present a proposal for the construction of an elevated hybrid monorail system to the Davao City Council in the coming weeks. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is expected to be signed in February 2017. The project would take approximately three years to be implemented, one year for planning and design and then two years for construction. Each monorail, will travel at speeds up to 80 km/h, and would have two to eight rubber-tired cars, with a capacity of around 125 passengers per car.

Philtram Founder and Chief Operating Officer, Jose Guardo, explained that the project will be divided into four phases:

Phase 1 – 14 km from SM Lanang to Roxas Avenue, with stations located at the junction of R. Castillo and J.P Laurel Avenue; SM Lanang; Southern Philippine Medical Center; Abreeza, Ayala Mall; Gaisano Mall of Davao; “Duterte Central Station”, on Roxas Avenue.

Phase 2 – Quirino Avenue to Roxas Avenue, with stations located at: Quirino Avenue; Bankerohan; NCCC Mall of Davao in Ma-a; junction of General Douglas MacArthur Highway and Quimpo Boulevard Diversion Road; SM Ecoland; Davao City Overland Transport Terminal; Land Transportation Office (LTO 11) or Davao City Recreation Center; “Duterte Central Station” on Roxas Avenue.

Phase 3 – from the junction of General Douglas MacArthur Highway and Quimpo Boulevard Diversion Road to a new South Bus Terminal in Toril, with stations located at: junction of General Douglas MacArthur Highway and Quimpo Boulevard Diversion Road; Matina Crossing; Bangkal; Ulas; South Bus Terminal in Toril.

Phase 4 – currently being planned, probably connecting to the proposed North Bus Terminal in Panacan.

China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC) Planning will also take part in this project.

Each station will have shops, car parking and offer free Wi-Fi access for the public. Davao City is located on Mindanao Island, the second largest and southernmost major island in the Philippines. With a population of 1.6 million people it is the country’s third most agglomerated city.
