Dakar Regional Express Train project starts construction

Dakar-airport_dakarPresident of Senegal, Macky Sall, officially launched the first phase of the Regional Express Train (TER) construction between Dakar and Diamniadio.

The Senegalese Government has awarded the EUR 373.5 million construction contract to a consortium including Eiffage (leader with a 45% share) through its Eiffage Génie Civil, Eiffage Rail and Eiffage Senegal subsidiaries, along with Turkish company Yapi Merkezi and Senegal’s CSE (Compagnie Sahélienne d’Entreprise).

ENGIE in partnership with Thales will manage the section of the project involving the design and implementation of infrastructures and systems for TER. Technical system integration includes the railway signalling systems for train control and safety management of the switching system, the train and power rail power supply stations, the online telecommunications systems in the 14 stations and the maintenance centres: passenger safety with CCTV monitoring, passenger Wi-Fi connection on board the train and in the stations, the GSM-R system (rail telecommunications network), fire detection, real-time passenger information on the platforms and on board the trains and a comprehensive ticket system.

The 55km rail link will connect Dakar city centre with the future Blaise-Diagne International Airport (AIBD) in 45 min journey, with trains running every 15 minutes. The line will have 14 suburban stations, with two new stations at Diamniadio and Blaise-Diagne Airport.

The works on the first section linking Dakar to Diamniadio (36 km) are expected to last 26 months. The second 19 km section linking Diamniadio to the international airport will take 15 months to complete. Design studies and works have just started for commissioning of the first section of the route planned for the end of 2018.
