Indian Railways and Kerala government to develop rail infrastructure

07-indiaIndian Railways signed a joint venture agreement with the government of the Indian state of Kerala for developing rail infrastructure in the state. According to railways minister Suresh Prabhu, the state of Kerala has been neglected for too long and now concerted efforts are needed to develop its rail infrastructure.
The company has given maximum budget allocation to Kerala during the 2014-15 to 2016-17 period. The average is Rs 8.21 billion (109.4 million euros) during 2014-15 to 2016-17 which is an increase of 121% over the 2009-10 to 2013-14 period. The Indian Railways are also working on the re-development of Kochi and Ernakulam stations in the state.
At present, the railway network density in Kerala is 2.70 km per 100 square km.
