Polish Railways will invest more than PLN 600 million (EUR 138 million) to improve rail access to Szczecin and Swinoujscie sea ports. The investment is part of the company’s PLN 4 billion (EUR 921.4 million) programme to improve rail access to the Baltic Sea. The projects aim to removing bottlenecks, increasing the railway capacity, shortening the time travel and ensuring the highest punctuality.
The project involves the construction of a station in central Ports Szczecin and Swinoujscie, the Ostrów Grabowski container terminal and railway tracks in Swinoujscie port. Within the two ports, PKP PLK will launch works on 160 of rail track, 2 overpasses and a bridge and there are also plans for electrification and modernisation of the signalling systems of some selected sections. Similar works will be carried out in the area of Ostrów Grabowski container terminal.
‘By 2020, PKP PLK intends to implementa the rail access programme to the ports of Gdansk, Gdynia, Szczecin and Swinoujscie and the modernisation of Bydgoszcz-Tricity line. These investments have a EUR 921 million and will allow the capacity increase,’ Ireneusz Merchel, President of PKP Polish Railway Lines SA said.
In March 2016, Polish Railways announced that for rail access to Port of Gdańsk will be invested PLN 304 million (EUR 71 million) for the modernization of 226 line, the only rail link to the Northern Port. The project envisages the double-track bridge over the Martwa Wisła, a 12 km stretch of railway line between the Pruszcz Gdanski and Gdansk Port Polnocny (Northern Port) stations. The total cost of the project is PLN 500 million (EUR 117 million).
For Ports of Gdynia, Szczecin and Swinoujscie, PKP will invest PLN 1.5 billion (EUR 351.4 million) until 2020 for the modernization, construction and development of railway connections between these three ports. Currently, PKP PLK is preparing the tender documentation that will be launched this year. These projects were also submitted under the second CEF Call.
PLN 850 million (EUR 199 million) will be invested for rail access to the Port of Gdynia to increase the rail capacity, safety and efficiency. The projects in Szczecin and Swinoujscie port areas include the construction of Szczecin Harbour Centre and rail sections that will ensure the rail connections to the station, to the Ostrow Grabowski container terminal and Swinoujscie station.
